Offical Completion of The Kankan-Kérouané National Road Rehabilitation and Upgrade Project funded by Winning Consortium Simandou

June 17, 2021, Kérouané, Guinea – The Completion Ceremony of the N1 Kankan-Kérouané Road Rehabilitation and Upgrade Project, funded by Winning Consortium Simandou, was held in Kérouané.

The N1 road (Kankan-Kérouané) extends to a total length of 143.7 km. Most of the road is subgrade without any hardened pavement. Before the rehabilitation, the road surface is degraded and potholes, which poses enormous difficulties for the driving of vehicles. Some sections become extremely muddy and collapse during the rainy season, frequently causing traffic disruptions. Most sections are not equipped with drainage ditches. Culverts are blocked, and the superstructure of some bridges is severely damaged. There are almost no road safety signs all along the line.

The Kankan-Kérouané national road rehabilitation and upgrade project, launched on June 18, 2020, was recently completed. The total investment for the rehabilitation is around $ 30 million. After almost a year of rehabilitation, the road is widened to 8 meters and traffic conditions have improved considerably. Travel time by light vehicle between Kankan and Kérouané has been reduced from 10 hours to 3.5 hours.

According to Mr. Cherif Karamo, Deputy Director of Community Relations of WCS, the rehabilitation of this road has not only facilitated transport for the communities along the route, but also created many employment opportunities for the local populations. This road will also provide strong infrastructure support to stimulate local economic development in the future.
